Don’t Give Away Your Power to Be Happy
To a large extent, we’re content with reacting unconsciously to petty annoyances. We’re used to grumpiness, disappointment, and dissatisfaction. We become accustomed to gut reactions. For instance we honk our horn in traffic, turn on the TV when we’re bored, check our phone without a reason, get disappointed in other people, or interrupt someone while they’re talking. We’ve practiced these reactions for many, many years. They’re comfortable for us. But they don’t build happiness.
The world can be scary, but we have to remember our true place in it. The White House is probably not in your living room. The drama of other people is not your own drama. If we let bad news or the constant anxiety of the media get to us, we give away the power we possess to improve our own lives. These circumstances can only affect us as much as we allow them to. We can turn off the TV anytime (in fact, we can throw our TV in the garbage, where some may argue it belongs). We can choose not to pick up a newspaper, turn the radio to a different station, or donate to causes without letting them take over our life. We can help in a productive way without letting bad news depress us. We give away our power to other people, media, circumstances, events, and our past . . . all the time. Sometimes it may seem easier to give away our power, but it’s not helpful in the mission of improving our life. Allowing someone else or outside events to dictate our lives is like being a sheep whose only thought is following her shepherd.
You are not a sheep. But if you follow along like one, eventually you will feel directionless, obedient, and reactive. I call this a slave mentality. When you’re in a slave mentality, you’re promptly obeying some outside event, circumstance, or person instead of listening to your true self. Often your goals become lost or meaningless, and you wind up angry, sick, upset, and unhappy.
Assess your happiness in this simple, effective way:
How happy am I now?
How happy do I want to be?
What positive actions can I take to get there?
